How to Create a Dynamic Lecture

How to Create a Dynamic Lecture

Have you ever tried to improve on something?  Perhaps it is a physical challenge decrease the time it takes you complete a distance by 10% or maybe it is a mental challenge to be able to increase real accuracy by 5%.  All these challenges have one common theme, the idea that you can get better.  This is often referred to as a growth-mind set, the idea you can get better.  As an educator, perhaps lecture is your go-to method of instruction.  That is ok, but do you ever want to up your game?  Here are some tips to try to improve your lecture:
  1. Lecture-Discussion: Get the learners more involved in the session. As you lecture, pause periodically for learner input and discussion. There are three types of interactions during this type of lecture a) Lecturer to individual learners, b) Learner to lecturer, and c) Lecturer to whole group.
  2. Storytelling: Present information in a way that tells a story. Stories allow learners ways to connect to a topic, making it memorable. Stories also typically follow a particular structure or pattern ("plot"), making it easier for listeners to stay involved.
  3. Problem-Solving: Have the learners work through a problem with you during the lecture. Solving the problem serves as the focus of the lesson.
  4. Demonstration: Model how to do a process or an activity. Present this type of lecture in chronological order, talking aloud through the step-by-step, "how-to" instruction
While each method has advantages depending on the lecture topic, try them out and see what happens in the classroom.
